More Than Numbers: Cerclos

I can have a crazy CEO idea and then it comes back solved. Like if I could do that across every part of the business. Yeah, we'd be on a yacht right now. So we're lifecycle assessment software. So we're a software business first and foremost with a real focus on sustainability. We're decarbonizing the built environment through some pretty cool software. You know, the founders were sustainability consultants. So they are out manually completing lifecycle assessments for their customers. And obviously they found a better way to do things leveraging software.

So they've gone from sustainability consultants and engineers into, hey, let's build some software. Now, we can pretty confidently say that we are a software company with a focus in sustainability. We're saving the planet and that's really where the organization has come from. It's all around making sure we're leaving the planet in a better place than when we got here. We just happen to be doing that business in really cool tech. I was brought in to the business as CEO almost, it feels like two years, but it's probably a year and a half ago now.

The financial side was a mess. And with 15 years of history, we've gone from having the books done by the founders, by the founders' wives, insourced and outsourced and insourced again. And it was a risk that I was not willing to carry as I sort of took the helm to take this business to the next level. So I did a great Google search, came across Digit. I wasn't just looking for a bookkeeper or someone that could support us with payroll. The thing that jumped out was the sort of systems thinking and the tech side of it.

It's how do we look at all our systems across the business and integrate those to give me the insights I need to make better decisions, hence the call. For me, the finance side just needs to be something that happens. I just need to know that it's in safe hands, whether it's myself or the rest of the team can be focusing on the things that we do best. But you want to do that with someone that you know and trust, and we were able to, I guess, get that trust really quickly. They actually just feel part of the team and that's seamless.

So the rest of the team don't actually know that they're outsourced. There's been a number of times which I've sent an email across to Andrew or Scott and say, "I sort of want to see this. I'm not sure if that's right or how we get there." Limited detail, but with a loose sort of idea of what I think good looks like. And then you'll take the time and then come back and present generally a couple of options. To me, that's the value. And it's not just an outsourced bookkeeper or someone outsourcing doing or supporting us on payroll.

It's outsourcing a bunch of real deep thinking around what's the best for our business and our business now. The Digit team has been fantastic. They do feel like they are part of the Cerclos family. They give me all the insights that I need. I don't have to go chasing for answers always timely and accurate reporting. So it's what more could you want.
